BIRTH MARK TREATMENT
Birthmarks are benign pigmentary lesions that typically develop either before birth or shortly after birth. They can occur anywhere on the body and are generally harmless.
These birthmarks can be broadly categorized into two groups: pigmented birthmarks and vascular birthmarks. Pigmented birthmarks include café au lait spots, Becker’s nevus, and nevi of Ota and Ito. Vascular birthmarks, which involve an increased blood supply, include salmon patches, hemangiomas, and port-wine stains.
Naevus of Ota
Naevus of Ota occurs when melanocytes (pigmented cells) become trapped in the upper third of the skin’s dermis. It typically appears unilaterally around the eye and nearby facial area, following the distribution of the first two branches of the trigeminal nerve. This condition manifests as blue/gray to slate-brown flat or slightly raised patches of hyperpigmentation. It can be present from birth or emerge around puberty and is more common in females. Ocular involvement may also occur.
Naevus of Ito
Naevus of Ito is similar to naevus of Ota, but the pigmentation is located in the shoulder girdle area. It may coexist with naevus of Ota and occasionally involves sensory changes at the site.
Becker's Naevus
Becker’s naevus usually appears around puberty or at birth. It typically presents as an asymmetrical tan-brown pigmentation on the torso or upper arm, although other body areas may be affected. This birthmark may gradually enlarge irregularly and often becomes thickened and hairier over time (hypertrichosis).
These conditions are primarily cosmetic concerns and can be managed with temporary cosmetic camouflage or medical treatments.
