SKIN CANCER EXCISION

What is Skin Cancer Excision ?

Skin cancer excision is a surgical procedure aimed at removing cancerous cells from the skin. It’s typically employed when other treatments such as radiation therapy or topical medications aren’t sufficient.

Causes of Skin Cancer:

  1. UV Radiation: Prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or artificial sources like tanning beds damages skin cells and can lead to cancer.
  2. Genetics: Individuals with a family history of skin cancer may be genetically predisposed to developing the condition.
  3. Fair Skin: People with fair skin, light-colored eyes, and light hair are at higher risk due to less melanin, which provides natural protection against UV radiation.
  4. Immune Suppression: Conditions or medications that suppress the immune system increase the risk of skin cancer.

Types of Skin Cancer:

  • Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most common type, usually appears as a pearly or waxy bump or a flat, flesh-colored or brown scar-like lesion.
  • Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Typically presents as a red, firm nodule or a flat lesion with a scaly or crusty surface.
  • Melanoma: The most aggressive type, often develops from an existing mole or appears as a new dark spot on the skin.

Treatments for Skin Cancer:

  • Excision Surgery: Involves removing the cancerous tissue along with a margin of healthy skin to ensure all cancer cells are eliminated.
  • Mohs Surgery: A specialized technique where thin layers of skin are progressively removed and examined under a microscope until no cancer cells are detected.
  • Cryotherapy: Freezing the cancerous cells with liquid nitrogen.
  • Radiation Therapy: Using high-energy rays to destroy cancer cells.
  • Topical Medications: Prescription creams or gels containing substances that target and kill cancer cells.
